Grace Billotti Spinelli Papers -- NOW OPEN FOR RESEARCH!

The collection includes her political papers related to her run for office in the Jersey City municipal election of 1941 on the Anti-Hague Citizen Ticket. (including the pamphlet pictured above). It includes her campaign material, such as photographs, promotional items, speeches, notes, election results, clippings, and a later retrospective from the 1970s. It also includes her files on various political figure, which consists of her correspondence with them (mostly relating her to run for office) and clippings related to their political activities. Her files are on Governor Charles Edison (NJ-D), Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague, Federal Judge Thomas F. Meaney, Senator Arthur Harry Moore (NJ-D), and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her papers also include organization and affiliation records from the YWCA and the International Institute of Jersey City, her correspondence, subject files, and photographs. We also have copies of her manuscripts and writings, including her autobiography titled Roots and Wings

 

Her collection is a rich piece of Jersey City history that Saint Peter's University is proud to steward. For any researchers, students, staff, or faculty, this collection offers a keen insight into Jersey City's Hague-Era political climate and provides details about Billotti Spinelli's experience as an Italian Immigrant in Jersey City.
